Don’t be dissuaded if you can’t immediately find your way inside Mary Jane’s The Bar, a lush rooftop with a hidden entrance on a through-street near Le Van Tam Park. When you see the bank with a vacant front desk, you’ll know you’ve made it. Climb the steps to the tiny elevator, hit floor ten, and this secret bar will make you forget all previous uncertainties.
Mary Jane’s is a rooftop space with a near-panoramic view of Saigon while, at the same time, existing as a zone free of pretension and the sometimes-overbearing, dress-code-oriented atmospheres pervasive at many of the city’s elevated venues. The prices are low and the vibe is lax. Filled with a mostly young clientele, Mary Jane’s is divided into two open air sectors, each with benches and tables to comfortably take in the cityscape. If you opt to walk off the last round down the narrow stairwell, you’ll see that the floors below Mary Jane’s are occupied by nondescript cubicles and office spaces; it’s a striking contrast to the vibrant space blasting house music just a few stories above.
Not sure what to try? Saigon Special beers start at 25K VND, while cocktails, from minty, surprisingly strong mojitos to rum and cokes, range from 70-90K VND. A green oasis amid the chaos of District 1, Mary Jane’s is the perfect place to catch a sunset, enjoy a nightcap, or simply update your Instagram story.
